STEPS Seminar

On December 13 & 14 we held a STEPS seminar for 23 Kindergarten Teachers from Dauis, Bohol. In the seminar, we imparted new tried and proven teaching methods that help teach preschool children more effectively and are specifically geared towards Filipino children. All of the teachers received certificates from the Department of Education for finishing successfully. - Dezember 13. und 14. hielten wir ein STEPS Seminar für 23 Kindergartenlehrer/innen von Dauis, Bohol. Im Seminar vermittelten wir neue, effektive und geprüfte Lehrmethoden für Kinder im Vorschulalter, welche spezifisch für Philippiner ausgerichtet sind. Alle Teilnehmer erhielten ein Diplom vom Schulungsministerium.

Puppet Theaters - Puppentheater

We are in the middle of visiting all the preschools and primary school in Dauis and Panglao! Pablo, Joel, Sam and Natalia bring lots of Christmas cheer to the many children with their puppets! - Hier sind ein paar Bilder von unserem schon traditionellen Puppentheater! Jeden Tag besuchen wir hunderte von Kindern in den Schulen und Gemeinden hier auf der ganzen Insel, wo Pablo, Joel, Natalia und Sam mit ihren Puppen viel Freude bringen.

New Mission in Panglao - Panglaoprojekt

Since beginning of November we have been in Panglao, Bohol. Since coming here, we have been doing a lot of research on how to help people here most effectively and have met with many people in the course of our research, such as mayors of Dauis and Panglao, Barangay captains and Kagawads, fisher men, teachers etc. - Seit Anfang November sind wir hier in Panglao, Bohol. Seit unserer Ankunft treffen wir uns täglich mit Gemeindevorstehern, Fischermännern, Lehrern, Müttern,  u.s.w., um Informationen für eine effektive und progressive Entwicklungshilfe zu sammeln.

This month on Dec. 13 & 14, we’ll be holding a seminar for the teachers and volunteers that are interested in implementing the program in their schools or would like to do special classes with the children in their schools. - Jo führt hier gerade mehreren Kindergartenlehrerinnen das STEPS Program vor. Am 13. Und 14. Dezember halten wir ein Seminar für  diejenigen Leherinnnen, die daran interessiert sind, das STEPS Programm in ihrer Schule anzuwenden, oder Spezialkürse geben möchten.

Manny, Pablo, Meeky and Eveline are talking with the head of the fishermen association in Doljo, as well as with the Brgy captain Mercia and Kagawad Angel and other interested persons. - Hier reden wir gerade mit dem Fischereivorstand von Doljo und Gemeindevorsteherin Mercia und Angel, Zuständige für Gesundheit und Erziehung.

Since fishing is the main industry in Panglao, (over 90% are living of this trade), Manny was doing a lot of research into how to help the local fisher men make a better living off their trade. He found out that Aquaponic (an integrated aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponic (growing soilless plants) system that mutually benefits both environments) We will try this method out first, and if it´s tried and proven, we´ll present it to the fisher men. - Fischen ist in den meisten Gemeinden auf Panglao die Haupteinkommensquelle. Jo recherchiert bessere und ergiebigere Methoden der Fischerei, wie z.B. Aquaponik (eine Polykultur von Fischzucht und Naturpflanzenkultur, welche in denselben Wasserkreislauf integriert sind.) Wir werden diese Methode zuerst bei uns zuhause anwenden und wenn sie sich bewährt, den Fischern vorstellen.

Here we visit one of the many poor areas of the island. We are welcomed by many children. A big problem is the sanitary condition. There are only few toilets, no public ones, and only little water! Waste is everywhere. 
Because of lack of opportunities, many people lost hope and turned to gambling, got lazy and pretty much accepted the fact of their situation. - Hier sind wir auf einem Besuch in einem der Armenviertel, wovon es in Doljo, einem kleinen Distrikt in Panglao, schon 7 gibt! Wie immer gibt es hunderte von Kindern, viele barfuss. Ein grosses Problem in diesen Slums ist die sanitäre Situation. Nur sehr wenige und keine öffentlichen Toiletten, keine Abfallversorgung, und nur wenig Wasser! Es gibt keine Krankenkassen, Gesundheitsversorgung ist schlecht bis nicht-existierend. Vor zwei Wochen starb eine 24-jährige Frau an TB! Wegen Korruption haben viele jegliche Hoffnung verloren und sind dem Spielen verfallen, sind faul, arbeiten nur wenn sie kein Geld mehr haben.

These are pictures of our meeting we held with the Barangay (smallest administrative division) captain and the councilors and Purok (district) chiefs in Doljo. It was an open forum with everybody being free to bring up points and needs their specific Purok has. It was a good opportunity to get united under the banner of improving the lives of the many underprivilged children and families in Doljo. We made a few decisions, such as to build toilets in the squatter areas where there are no public, very few private toilets, improve the water situation there, and help with the waste management. (The latter 2 need further discussion and sponsorship!) It was decided to meet monthly! - Hier halten wir ein Meeting mit dem Gemeindevorstand aus Dolho in Panglao. Einige dieser Gemeindevorsteher hatten langjährige Probleme miteindander, welche in diesem Treffen unter dem gemeinsamen Banner der Nächstenliebe und Hilfe für die Armen in den Armenvierteln begraben wurden! Einige Entscheidungen wurden getroffen, wie z.B. öffentliche Toiletten in den Elendsvierteln zu bauen, neue Wasserleitungen zu bringen, und Verwertung und rechtmässige Handlung des Abfalls. Wir haben uns auch dazu entschieden, monaltich zu treffen und den Progress der jeweiligen Entscheidungen zu verfolgen und neue Probleme anzufassen.

Weekend Classes in JalaJala - Wochenendkurse in JalaJala

Since November, Thea with a few more young volunteers, go every weekend up the mountains in JalaJala, Tanay, to teach STEPS to about 30 children.

Seit November unterrichten Thea und einige ihrer Freunde etwa 30 Kinder in den Bergen JalaJalas. Jedes Wochenende, bei Regen oder Sonne und in ihrer Freizeit, nehmen sie den strapaziösen Aufstieg auf sich, um die armen Kinder der Bergstämme das STEPS Programm zu lehren!

STEPS Graduation - STEPS Abschluss

30 STEPS Students graduated last Saturday, 15th of October, in MGV in Paranaque. After weeks of preparation, the day of graduation finally arrived! 30 children, aged 3 - 5, received their certificates of graduation for a free 6 months course in reading, writing, math etc.

30 STEPS-Schüler feierten letzten Samstag, dem 15. Oktober, in Marcelo Green Village, Paranaque, ihren Abschluss. In unserem 6-monatigen Kurs lernen 3-5 Jährige Lesen, einfaches Schreiben, Rechnen etc. Die Kinder sind aus umliegenden Armenvierteln, v.a. aus Mangahan & Kawayanan.

Our STEPS school, that caters mainly to the poor, has been in existence since over 2 years, and so far more than 100 children in their preschool age have learned to read, write and do simple math in six months courses. Seminars for New Teachers and Volunteers - Seminare für Neue Lehrer und Freiwillige

In light of our move to Bohol and Tanay, Manny has been teaching new teachers and volunteers to continue our STEPS program with the preschool children. Rejoice, our present STEPS teacher, will continue to train teachers to use the STEPS program for the next two months.

Da wir bald nach Bohol umziehen, hat Manny (Jo) neue Lehrer und Freiwillige im STEPS Programm unterrichtet. Rejoice, unsere jetzige STEPS Lehrerin, wird in den nächsten zwei Monaten weiterfahren, Lehrer und Freiwillige auf das STEPS vorzubereiten.

Moving to Bohol and Tanay - Umzug nach Bohol und Tanay

The Lord has opened a door for us to expand our mission to Bohol and Tanay.
A friend of ours is constructing a hotel in Panglao island, and he asked us if we would help him with managing the center he is building for the poor. We will be opening up a new STEPS school, as well as do livelihood projects with the poor and under-privileged.
Our teacher Rejoice and her daughter Thea will be heading back to Hala Hala in Tanay and open their own STEPS school for the mountain people.
Our STEPS school in Paranaque will be overseen by Danny and Joy, and hopefully another new STEPS school under the management of Flo, Andi and Gabe will open up near Bicutan in the near future.

Wir haben von einem guten Freund eine Einladung erhalten, auf Panglao ein Zentrum für Arme und Minderbemittelte zu leiten. Ende Oktober werden wir dorthin umziehen und eine neue STEPS Schule aufbauen, sowie auch Entwicklungshilfe leisten.
Unsere jetzige Lehrerin Rejoice will mit ihrer Tochter eine neue STEPS Schule in Hala Hala in Tanay eröffnen, und unsere Freunde Danny und Joy werden die hiesige Schule in Marcelo Green, Paranaque, weiterleiten. Der Gemeindepräsident lässt uns einen Gemeinderaum benutzen und stellt Lehrer zur Verfügung. Eine grosse Antwort auf unser Gebet!
Flo, Gabe und Andi möchten Anfang nächstes Jahr auch selber eine STEPS Schule eröffnen. Sie haben schon seit einiger Zeit bei uns im Unterricht mitgemacht und viel dabei gelernt.

At a recent Football competition our Foot4Hope team won 3rd price and was honored by receiving a Bronze medal from the Philippine National "Azkal" Football Team!

Graduation Prep

At the moment we are preparing for the graduation of our STEPS children. Daily practice for the different activities is a highlight for the children and mothers alike.

STEPS Writing Exercises

Writing and pre-writing exercises are done with the children on a regular basis at our STEPS school. 

We encourage the parents to participate in their children's school and to help them with their school work. That way they are involved and learn our teaching methods and can use them at home, too.

Drawing, coloring and other art work teach the children coordination.
